Included here is the Shetland Islands. They include 16 inhabited islands north-east of the Scottish mainland, the largest of which is known as Mainland.
Of the endemic plants so far recorded there 22 endemic species and 1 endemic subspecies. However, all listed members of the Asteraceae are classed as apomictic (undergoing asexual reproduction) so not regarded as fully developed species by some authorities and as a consequence given name microspecies.
