Included here are the southern Mediterranean parts of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar, and a large part of Morocco including the Haut Atlas and Anti Atlas Mountains.
Of the endemic and near endemic vascular plants so far recorded there are about 364 species in 174 genera and 44 families. There are 8 endemic genera (marked red) and 1 endemic family (Drosophyllaceae). The genes Hemicrambe (marked blue) has an interesting disjunct distribution with 1 endemic species in Morocco and the other on the Indian Ocean island of Socotra, and is thought to have Tethyan origin.
