Summary
Included here is the central deserts of Australia including the Great Sandy Desert, Gibson Desert, Great Victoria Desert, the deserts of the Northern Territory, the Nullarbor Plain and a considerable part of the Great Artesian Basin. In the west it extends to the Indian Ocean between the Edel Peninsula and Roebuck Bay, while in the east it reaches the Darling River in New South Wales.
Of the endemic and near endemic vascular plants so far recorded there are about 752 species in 260 genera and 59 families. There are 23 endemic genera (marked red) and a further 85 genera endemic to Australian (marked purple). There is also one family (Gyrostemonaceae) endemic to Australia (marked green). However, there is reported to be 102 endemic genera so further information is required.
