Summary
Included here is sub-antarctic Chile and a series of associated islands south of about 48 degrees latitude. Among the larger of these are the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Islands, South Sandwich Islands, South Orkney Islands and South Shetland Islands. Its southern boundary extends to the Antarctic Peninsula and its associated islands including the small island of Neny, which is the southern limit of vascular plants.
Of the endemic and near vascular plants so far recorded there are about 131 species in 89 genera and 43 families. There are 13 endemic or near endemic genera (marked red) but no endemic families. However, Philesiaceae is restricted to southern Chile, Misodendraceae is restricted to South America and Tetrachondraceae has a disjunct distribution with one species endemic to New Zealand and the other to southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
