Summary
Included here are the major mountain systems of Mexico including the southern slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur, the northern parts of the Sierra Madre Occidentale and Sierra Madre Orientale and the altiplane of central Mexico.
Of the endemic and near endemic vascular plants so far recorded there are about 909 species in 586 genera and 118 families. There are 197 endemic genera (marked red) and 1 endemic family (the Setchellanthaceae) but the family Crossosomataceae is largely confined to Mexico and the family Siparunaceae is confined to the neotropics. However, although all the plants listed here are endemic to Mexico some may not be confined to the highlands.
