Summary
Included here is a region of South Africa adjacent to the Indian Ocean known as Pondoland. It stretches along a coastal strip some 50 km wide between the Mthatha River in the south and the Mtamvuna River in the north and is regarded as a centre of endemism.
Of the endemic and near endemic vascular plants so far recorded there are about 127 species in 77 genera and 45 families. There are 2 endemic genera (marked red) but no endemic families. However the families Bruniaceae and Penaeaceae are restricted to South Africa. The genus Atalaya has an interesting distribution. It occurs nowhere else in Africa but outside Africa it occurs in Asia and Madagascar.
