Balearic BioProvince

This BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) contains the Balearic Islands including Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Cabrera situated in the western Mediterranean. The geology comprises older rocks ranging from Devonian to Cretaceous, which form all of the higher parts, and a younger series of Tertiary age. They enjoy a temperate, Mediterranean climate and the cooling influence of the sea moderates temperatures in summer. The flora includes about 50 endemic species and sub-species, and originally the BioProvince was thought to have an endemic genus Naufraga (N. balearica) but in 1981 it was also discovered in Corsica.  In the Balearic Islands this plant is confined to sea cliffs on Majorca.

The following accounts for this BioProvince have been written or will be written with particular reference to endemic and locally important species. Accounts available are displayed in green or yellow. Those displayed in red are either in the pipeline or awaiting expert contributions.
