South Moroccan BioProvince

This BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) extends from the shores of the Atlantic to the western foothills of the Haut Atlas and the Anti Atlas Mountains, and forms a belt roughly between the latitudes 29 degrees and 32 degrees 31 minutes. The geology is complex and varied, while the climate is described as transitional, lying at the southernmost limit of the Mediterranean zone but close to the boundary of the sub-tropical, semi-arid zone. Therefore, although moderated by the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures and sunshine hours tend to be higher while precipitation is lower. The seasons are marked by a dry period in summer but generally there is an unreliable pattern of precipitation. It is not possible to be specific about the South Moroccan flora but Morocco as whole has some 4,500 taxa, with some 600 to 650 considered to be endemic.
