Andamanese BioProvince

This BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) includes the 204 Andaman Islands and the 22 Nicobar Islands situated in the Bay of Bengal. The Andamans are mainly composed of noncalcareous, grey limestone, while the Nicobars are composed of a mixture of plutonic rocks and stratified deposits of sandstone, slate, clay, marls and recent corals. They both lie within the tropics and experience a monsoonal climate. The flora is derived mainly from Myanmar (Burma) but also includes elements from Malaya, Sri Lanka and India. The flora has one endemic genus (Pubistylus) and at least 86 endemic and near endemic species but only about 12 of these occur on the Nicobar Islands.

The following accounts for this BioProvince have been written or will be written with particular reference to endemic and locally important species. Accounts available are displayed in green or yellow. Those displayed in red are either in the pipeline or awaiting expert contributions.
