Tristan-Goughian BioProvince
Situated in the South Atlantic, this BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) includes the islands of Tristan da Cunha, Gough, Inaccessible and Nightingale. These volcanic islands lie about 400 km east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge but their volcanic activity is unrelated to the activity associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Nightingale is the oldest in the archipelago at 18 million years, while Inaccessible is around 5 million years old and Tristan da Cunha is relatively young at just 1 million years old. Among the islands as a whole about 40 endemic species have been recorded.
The following accounts for this BioProvince have been written or will be written with particular reference to endemic and locally important species. Accounts available are displayed in green or yellow. Those displayed in red are either in the pipeline or awaiting expert contributions.
