Northern Chinese BioProvince
In the northern China this BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) extends up to the Mongolian and Manchurian bioprovinces, while south of this, it includes part of the Loess Plateau, the Shanxi Plateau, the North China Plain, the Jehol Mountains (north Hopeh mountain area), the Liaodong Peninsula and the Shandong Peninsula. Northern China has a complex geology and is largely characterized by a temperate continental climate but with extremely cold winters. The flora includes a number of endemic or near endemic genera including Ammopiptanthus (Fabaceae), Plagiospermum (Rosaceae), Potaninia (Rosaceae), Xanthoceras (Sapindaceae), Myripnois (Asteraceae), Oresitrophe (Saxifragaceae), Ostryopsis (Betulaceae), and a multitude of endemic and subendemic species. The endemic genera Myripnois, Oresitrophe, and Ostryopsis are regarded as palaeoendemics or relics of an earlier flora.
The following accounts for this BioProvince have been written or will be written with particular reference to endemic and locally important species. Accounts available are displayed in green or yellow. Those displayed in red are either in the pipeline or awaiting expert contributions.
