Northern Myanmar BioProvince

This BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) includes the upper course of the Nmai River and part of the Irrawaddy River Basin in northeast Myanmar (Burma), while in the northwest it includes the eastern slopes of the Patkai Range but not the Chindwinn River Basin. The geology is complex and variable but in general terms the climate is moist and warm in the valleys, moist and cool at mid-altitudes and cold and moist above 3000 m. Most of the rain or snow falls in spring and summer but there is always sufficient rain to maintain high humidities and draught is unknown. The flora has several endemic genera including Woodburnia (Araliaceae) and a large number of endemic species (about 25% of the flora). Most of the endemics have Chinese or Indo-Malaysian affinity. The genus Rhododendron is particularly well represent in the uplands with up to 26 endemic species.

The following accounts for this BioProvince have been written or will be written with particular reference to endemic and locally important species. Accounts available are displayed in green or yellow. Those displayed in red are either in the pipeline or awaiting expert contributions.
