Southwestern Mediterranean BioProvince
This BioProvince (as defined by Armen Takhtajan) includes the southern Mediterranean parts of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar, and a large part of Morocco including the Haut Atlas and Anti Atlas Mountains. The coast experiences a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, but Inland this quickly gives way to a hotter, drier, more continental conditions. The flora has a range of endemic genera including Argania, Ceratocnemum, Crambella, Drosophyllum, Hemicrambe, Rytidocarpus, Stauracanthus and Trachystoma, and a large number of endemic species. The Straits of Gibraltar is the only European site for the ancient Psilotum nudum.
